2023 Solid Waste Sustainability High School Camp
The camp aimed to elevate students' awareness of environmental protection, with a specific focus on promoting the recycling of materials. The emphasis was on instructing students in the art of repurposing and reusing recycled materials such as glass and plastics, particularly for the construction of infrastructures. At the University of South Alabama, a recent environmental education initiative unfolded with great success as high school students from Monroe County, Baldwin County, and Theodore High Schools converged for an enlightening camp. Directed by Dr. Shenghua Wu, and co-directed by Dr. Melike Dizbay-Onat, Dr. Kaushik Venkiteshwaran, and Prof. Matthew Patterson, the camp went beyond theoretical discussions to immerse students in hands-on activities at various locations.
Throughout the program, students delved into a recycling center, gaining firsthand insights into the intricacies of material reuse. A captivating glass studio tour offered a unique perspective on repurposing glass materials, while the exploration of sustainable concrete design showcased innovative approaches to eco-friendly construction. Additionally, a microplastic demo provided an essential examination of the impact of plastics on the environment.
Held at the University of South Alabama, the camps resounding success of the event has sparked enthusiasm for the prospect of future camps, as the organizers envision expanding on this impactful initiative to continue fostering environmental awareness and leadership among students.
